3. Use and update your Anti-virus software
When you connect to a public and open hot-spot you have no assurance that the other computers on the network are not inadvertently distributing viruses to other computers logged onto the hot-spot. That makes it even more important to use anti-virus software that protects your computer from viruses that can destroy your data, slow your computer's performance, cause a crash, or even allow spammers to send email through your account. It works by scanning your computer and your incoming email for viruses, and then deleting them.
Of course, antivirus software is only as good as its last update as there are always new viruses.
