4. Use a firewall
When sharing an open hot-spot with other unknown computers, your computer becomes more susceptible to attacks that may originate from other computers on the open hot-spot. Identity thieves and hackers may try to use the hot-spot's network to connect directly to your computer.
Use a firewall to protect yourself from this type of attack because it protects you from attacks that originate outside of your network, but also those from other computers on the same network. Firewalls help keep hackers from using your computer to send out your personal information without your permission. While anti-virus software scans incoming email and files, a firewall is like a guard, watching for outside attempts to access your system and blocking communications from and to sources you don't permit. It is more important than ever to have a firewall when you connect to a public wireless network.
