A variety of organizations have conducted valuable research that helps us understand the ever changing landscape of consumer behavior and cyber crime.

We have collected some of these great studies and made them available in one place, so those interested don’t have to search for them. We hope this resource makes it easy for all of us to get a perspective on how we can help consumers and businesses protect themselves from Internet crime and cyber attacks.

US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT)
US-CERT is a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the public and private sectors. Established in 2003 to protect the nation's Internet infrastructure, US-CERT coordinates defense against and responses to cyber attacks across the nation.

This report summarizes and provides analysis of incident reports submitted to US-CERT during the U.S. Government fiscal year 2008 first quarter (FY08 Q1), that is, the period of October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007.

Federal Trade Commission’s Fraud Trends Reports
The Federal Trade Commission through its Consumer Sentinel program has collected data that allows the Commission to pinpoint trends and developments in consumer fraud. The data collected by the Consumer Sentinel program includes not only consumer fraud and identity theft complaints received by the FTC, but also complaints from over 100 different U.S. and Canadian federal, state, and non-governmental organizations.

Internet Crime Complaint Center’s Annual Internet Fraud Trend Report
The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a joint initiative between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center that receives Internet related criminal complaints, and refers the criminal complaints to federal, state, local, or international law enforcement and/or regulatory agencies for any investigation they deem to be appropriate.

Every year the Internet Crime Complaint Center releases an Internet Fraud Trends report that the Center has compiled based on consumer complaints it receives from its website and other law enforcement agencies.

Internet Fraud Watch Annual Internet Fraud Statistics Report
The Internet Fraud Watch is run by the National Consumers League and is an Internet Hotline where consumers can file Internet fraud complaints.  Every year since 1997, Internet Fraud Watch has published an Internet Fraud Trends Report based on consumer complaints it receives.

Anti-Phishing Working Group’s Monthly Phishing Trends Reports
The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) is the global pan-industrial and law enforcement association focused on eliminating the fraud and identity theft that result from phishing, pharming and email spoofing of all types.  Based on phishing attack reports the Anti-Phishing Working Group receives from consumers and companies, the APWG produces monthly reports on phishing attack trends.

Pew Internet and American Life Project Cyber Security Studies
The Pew Internet & American Life Project produces reports that explore the impact of the Internet on families, communities, work and home, daily life, education, health care, and civic and political life. The Project aims to be an authoritative source on the evolution of the Internet through collection of data and analysis of real-world developments as they affect the virtual world.

The percentage of internet users who use search engines on a typical day has been steadily rising from about one-third of all users in 2002, to a new high of just under one-half (49%).

Symantec Reports
The Norton Online Living Report  gives a snapshot of how different cultures and different countries approach the Internet and provides insight into how their daily lives are affected by the online world. All the data is constantly changing and will be updated in further iterations of this first bi-annual report.

The Symantec Internet Security Threat Report offers analysis and discussion of threat activity over a six-month period. It covers Internet attacks, vulnerabilities
