Home User Call-out

Are your defenses up and your instincts honed?

Cyber criminals, like most criminals, are opportunistic. They seek out vulnerabilities on computers to send spam and phishing emails or try to trick people into providing information that allow criminals to pillage bank accounts and steal identities.

Home computers are favorite targets of criminals. You need to be vigilant by employing the latest in security technology and by employing the same intuition you use in the “offline” world:

  • Use a variety of tactics and technologies to make it as difficult as possible for criminals to access your home computer; and
  • Hone your instincts about when and where it’s appropriate to share personal information

Report and Handle Problems

SpamG, spywareG, virusesG, and hackers are a few things to be aware of while surfing the Web. There are several tools to help minimize your risk of getting scammed or getting your identity stolen, such as anti-spyware software, anti-virus software, and spam filters. Another solution is to report the problem to your InternetG Service Provider (ISPG).

Some ISPs direct users reportingGGG spam to SpamCop (http://www.spamcop.net/).
ScamCop identifies the origin of the email and then reports it to the appropriate ISP to take action.

You can also report spam and phishingG emails to:

 - Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Simply send a copy of the email to spam@uce.gov.

 - Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). File a complaint at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

 - The Anti-Phishing Working Group, which consists of ISPs, security vendors, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies. You can forward your phishing emails to reportphishing@antiphishing.org to help them fight phishing.
