Detect Incidents

How to detect a cyber incident in your business.

Detect Incidents

The first step toward fixing a cybersecurity incident is by detection. We install fire alarms and security systems in our homes and businesses to alert us to problems. We also need to stay alert and be able to detect cybersecurity issues. The faster you can respond to an incident, the faster you can squash it!

5 lines of cyber defense

1. Email

Spend a few seconds with every email and ensure it is legitimate – even just four seconds of examination can help you identify phishing attempts. Do not click any links or download attachments from a suspicious email. If you are getting a lot of suspicious emails, or people tell you that they are receiving suspicious emails or social media messages from your account that you did not send, you may have been the victim of an incident.

2. Device and Software Scans

Take advantage of cybersecurity products or services that monitor your networks, like antivirus software. Regularly conduct scans and read the reports.

3. Users

Train your employees on best cybersecurity practices and make sure they know what cyberattacks look like. Encourage an environment of empowerment so workers know to report incidents right away. Your workforce can be a force multiplier – with the right training, they will be well aware of how to detect incidents.

4. Your Physical Space

Cybersecurity and the physical security of your business are interrelated. Is your workspace lax with who can access your company’s computers? Do you notice any suspicious activity from employees or customers? Are people in locations they shouldn’t be? Physical security can be one of the best ways to boost cybersecurity.

5. Shared Knowledge

Talk to others in your industry. Reach out to local IT experts. Know the latest security incidents facing your industry and how to detect and prevent them. Work together to monitor joint networks and share knowledge.
